Darfur murder confirmation hearings open
191009_garda_ANP_0The International Criminal Court in The Hague has begun a confirmation hearing in the case of rebel leader Bahr Idriss Abu Gardar from the Sudanese region of Darfur. The judges must decide in the coming weeks whether ICC prosecutors have enough evidence to begin a trial against Mr Abu Gardar.

The 46-year-old is the leader of the United Resistance Front, a rebel group fighting against the government of Sudan. On 29 September 2007, he is said to have led 1000 heavily armed URF rebels in an attack on a base manned by African Union troops. Twelve AU peacekeepers were killed. He is also accused of murder and looting in Darfur.

Mr Abu Garda arrived at the court voluntarily; the first accused ever to do so. He says he came to prove his innocence.
